The a7 IV joins the ranks of cameras that can shoot images for HDR displays, capturing a wider range of tones and displaying them in a way that looks more natural. Autofocus is such a broad subject, with different subjects requiring different modes and different photographers preferring different approaches, that it’s almost impossible to give a comprehensive and definitive assessment of its performance.

This was going to be my “let’s shoot some stock photos while I am on vacation” type camera. I think I’ll get the original 6D or a Pentax K I owned a 5DIII and loved it. I was of the camp that said who needs a 5 stop push or more than 11 stops DR or more than 21 MP resolution. I upgraded to the IV last year; I love how clean the shadows look. I love how easy it is to recover when I do accidentally underexpose.
I love how well controlled the noise is in my astrophotographs. So these days, I am much less dismissive of new features – bottom line is that they make your job a lot easier and help you take better pictures in tough situations and are more forgiving of your mistakes.
I’m sure the 6D II will take great pictures. But be aware that it is highly overpriced for what it provides. And don’t be so dismissive of increased DR or better AF systems until you actually try them. My prints are normally 60″x60″ or 60″x90″. I don’t miss the days when I would spend weeks enlarging the files of my 5DII to that size!
Glad I didn’t wait for this and just bought a iv last year. Nikon’s flagship D5 has nearly the same “poor” DR as the 6D2. In other words, the DR is fine for most professional uses. There is one flaw with this review: the author is forgetting the universal truth that you can vacillate all you want, but time often makes decisions for us.
If you bought a 6D five years ago and have been shooting it a few times a week as you should be, your 6D is probably starting to wear out, cable sockets get loose, the lens mount might be a little tweaked, the shutter could be nearing it’s rated life—in other words, it’s probably time for you to start considering a replacement.
And in another 5 years just as your 6DII is ready to give up the ghost, Canon will helpfully provide a replacement. What a shame! If I were to become a racedriver and drive a car with hp I would surely think that’s pretty fast. But if I could get a car for less money with hp than that’s simply faster then a hp car.
Canon is driving with pulled parking brake and made the 6D II partly worse on purpose than it could be. This is where the problem begins. If it had been a technological milestone there would have been more room for better specs and innovation on 6D II.

You Art right. Some “review” sites praise everything so they don’t offend advertisers. DPR, being owned by Amazon who could probably buy Canon outright, can be fully honest. If anything, they are being generous with their scores to avoid very low sales through Amazon. The fact that it got no award should tell you that they really think it is a piece of junk. I am a Canon guy, amateur.
In other words.. I am the daddy wants to shoot pro-like pictures of my kids, shoot a little video of them starting to walk, doing something funny etc. I invested about 8k so far into my set. I could buy 5D, but that simply is not my League and I don’t need many of it’s classy features, that’s for guys making money on the thing.
End of the day the photo is the product, camera is just a part of the quotation. Spending on something actually adds less value to the end product just makes no sense, whatever fancy tags does it have alongside.
I’m in the same boat as you so feel the same way, totally! I was craving a flippy touchscreen like on my D that came out the same year as the 6Dmk1! The internet has changed the retailing. Even in big cities, it’s very hard to find a camera store carrying many models for buyers to try. For example, I have not seen any store carrying Sony A7R2 in my area, so I totally rely on reputable review sites to buy cameras and lenses.
Back in the film era how many camera stores had very high end SLRs for you to just try in your city? Magazines did not get any cut from the purchases, stores got business. Now, we read reviews online, and purchase via web links. The review sites get a cut from the purchases. Big difference for the stores. Most of them cannot afford carrying high end cameras.
There may have been more pro gear options for purchase in say Minneapolis, but even those stores didn’t really have the very high end SLRs on display for you to simply try in the shop. And back then, it was understood very well, in the US, that ordering the gear from NYC stores would be less expensive than purchasing say a Nikon F4, or whatever the Canon equivalent was, than buying the same gear at the store in Minneapolis.
The review websites don’t get any cut of the purchase if you don’t click on links directly on the review websites’ webpage. Also it’s more like getting a click fee, rarely is it a cut of the purchase. Agreed that NYC is outlier. I was about to buy 6D2, but DP’s review changed my decision. It can’t be that wrong.

However, it should not sacrifice image quality in any way, and that’s a real disappointment. Did you ever look through the viewfinders of the two cameras? The 6 D one and two both have much more possibilities for semi professional use. The controls feel much smoother and reliable, though this is also no problem in the As the Canon nomenclature says the 6 is two classes higher.

I own a D, my first Nikon and I had to send it in due to warranty issues. I owned 6 Canon cameras prior to Nikon and not one camera I owned malfunctioned. Not one. Yes, Sony is selling less cameras than Nikon yet their no. You can sell cheap Rebels and 50 1. Canon right now is just like Nokia in Yes, their share in numbers are huge, but Sony just making more money per camera or per glass.
Last time I’ve checked this is how Apple won the cell market. Also photocopiers is not that future-proof business you wanna bring into discussion, you know. The World is rapidly adopting electronic paper circulation and Canon could be left behind even here in 10 years or so. I stand by my statement. Canon isn’t going to sink because some pixel peepers don’t like the 6D2. Canon is a diversified company, and the money they make from their cameras will sustain them, even if the 6D2 isn’t as profitable as they had hoped.

Canon will be perfectly fine. No company is perfect and all companies have their failures. Canon didn’t accidentally cripple the 6D2. They were very meticulous in where they wanted this camera to sit.

Also, last I checked, high end DSLRs are not turned over at anywhere close to the rate that cell phones were. People love throwing out fake facts like Canon is only popular because of Rebel. As you say, mate. But the fact is, in my line of work video production virtually every studio switched to Panasonic GH or Sony A7s with legacy Canon glass years ago.
Photo journos are wole another story mainly because their gear is supplied by the outlets, with whom Canikon have solid history , but this is not the main chunk of the photography market to begin with. Changes are happening, like it or not, but it’s nice that you’re in the Denial stage atm. Nikon sold way more bodies than Sony, yet not Sony is bleeding money right now.
Idk, do the math. Sure, Dual Pixel AF is great, but that’s the only thing in the last decade I would give them points for. Canon is making the same mistake that doomed so many companies in this new era of digital innovations. Being a captive of it’s own past success, it is afraid to cannibalize it’s own carefully segmented market, so it is not adapting fast enough to the changing conditions.
So it releases cameras that are fitting nicely in the artificial niches that never existed in the first place, but were forced on consumers with lack of other choices. Keep going like this, Canon, and you will lose everything. Look at Kodak, Polaroid, Blackberry, Nokia and countless other victims of their stagnant views. The 6DII: still heavy, slow, etc. I got my 6D on a very limited budget as I wanted to keep the lenses I have. When it finally dies, there won’t be a Canon body worth thinking about. Even the 5Ds are stupidly lumpen and unergonomic. Back in the day, you knew a pro camera, immediately you picked one up because of the build quality and the ergonomics. It simply worked better and was easier to use. Not any more. I know I’m getting old, but now a 6D, batteries, three lenses and very limited flash kit weighs as much as the kit in the rucksack!

I had a chance to handle the 6D2 and the 5D IV last week and found them more comfortable than my D It sounds like you want a lighter camera. Go mirrorless. Fuji makes a great product. Don’t go Sony if you plan on staying light. Their new G Master lenses are no smaller than SLR lenses, and if you add a grip that will just make the system almost as heavy as the 6D you currently have.

I’m sure it’s good for my health, too. Good choice. I have seen the writing on the wall and bought A7R2 this past winter. With all the quirks of that camera, it’s 5 years ahead of anything that Canon has to offer. Plus you can use any other glass including Canon with a range of adapters. DSLRs still have better focus sensitivity in dim light. Especially with adapted lenses, AF becomes almost unusable and you have to switch to MF. Or in very contrasty scenes like shooting against the sun.
Tell your stories to someone else. A7R2 focuses down to -3EV with fast lens attached. OVF will show you only what your eyes can see, which is nothing. EVF amplifies the signal, so I can see the entire composition as in day light. And the 4fps refresh rate is something I’ve never seen.

You need to emphasize how Lightroom and PhotoShop work together. Adobe packages them together for a single fee, along with a small amount of cloud storage. I recently began using Corel Paintshop Pro I had been using the various Photoshop Elements programs for many years.

I have been using Adobe Lightroom for the last five years and find it quite easy to use even for the beginners and has all the expert level adjustments at the finger tips. The only thing I would advise the Adobe people to work on is adding the content aware feature in Lightroom , I think after that most of the photographers would not need the Adobe Photoshop at all!

Thank you Alexandra for sharing this awesome photo editing software. I believe this two tool is more than enough for all photo editing needs. Any suggestions as to who does the best Clone tool? They all seem to work slightly different. I use it a lot. Their cameras are awkward to operate and menu does not make sense to me. As others have mentioned, no one would realistically turn down the gift of an expensive camera. If you did not want it to use yourself, you could give it to someone you know or sell it. To refuse that would not be taking any principled stand on any issue of importance. It would just be foolish. The biggest improvement is in the body, which is now inline with the newer Sony cameras. They need to sort out the eye af and sort it quickly. It feels a better back up to My A9 than the A7iii did.

You get the latest software version with the greatest new features and along the way you see your computer crashing and old projects screwed. You get newest camera with v1. So I can not remember theory from economy in which when your market is failing you rise the prices?!?!?!? Basically is just opposite! And example for pure lobbying! Second we constantly see how they are moving to the “high margin products” but mas produced format cameras are much more low margin products, and top models are far away from high margin products! So camera market is all but free market! And if they do not change, lower the expenses and make better products, they all will go out of the market.
Very, very, very simple market logic! Video-vs-photo: You have to take in account that modern digital cameras are high tech products, and that a shrinking marked will make the prices rise.
Also, the camera makers are extremely good at offering features that are seen as ‘added value’. The other alternative would be lower priced cameras, but not much new tech. Sony offer products in both segments. In general I agree with you but somehow you are missing the real point here.
And the point is – this products are not essential, compared to the smartphones or petrol for example! And also salaries for photographers drops constantly. We have several reports that show photographers at the bottom of the salary range in the US! Raising the prices in situation like this is like suicide.
Don’t get me started on the “High tech Side” of the things. This guys are so disconnected to the real high tech world that it is really amazing how actually they survive And in general low demand could raise the cost for production but this is not the same as raising the price! Nowhere I am saying everything could be done with smartphones! I am talking about market and different kinds of products. High end cameras does not sell well enough to carry the market and it never was like this! Second high volume segment was APS-C and they are going to totally kill it shortly If you have any statistic that could confirm that I will be happy to see it.

One just has to understand what the market really is, in other words the composition of the market in terms of potential customers. The camera market is and has been shrinking dramatically, due to the smartphone taking over as primary camera for most people. Some might think, well, if my product is selling less, then I need to lower my price. But the problem is that the market has shifted; the smartphone has disrupted it and changed most user’s expectations for what a camera is.
Just lowering the prices of dedicated cameras is not going to entice the vast majority of customers to buy a camera rather than use their smartphone. With most people you could give them a camera and they wouldn’t use it. Because of perceptions of ease of use and carry, and the idea that one will have a smartphone anyway and that the camera is value added, most will still use smartphones. Do you see my words above? So you need to have desirable product, and it need to be good product and on good price!
If product is not desirable does not matter if you will drop or rise the price! You are gone either way! But making same products just new version , rising the prices and blame the market is recipe for disaster, and we see it.
This is why explanation like – they need to rise the prices because the market is failing is nonsense. And not going to work. And if they really know what they are doing they should not be in this situation!
This very seems to replicate Kodak story. So when you analyze the camera market, you have to realize that those low end models are also competing against smartphones, and they don’t win out at any price. So the real market for dedicated cameras is more and more the professional and mostly, high end hobbyists who are really into using quality photo gear. That is the real market. Once you accept that then the behavior of these camera companies makes sense.
These camera companies are all coming to the same conclusion for a reason. They are not stupid. And we saw this same basic phenomenon play out in the audio market years ago and we are left with mostly high end audiophile gear now, along with the smartphones and bluetooth headphones. They are not stu No one with his right mind will chose camera with very basic jpg engine and f3 and above lens, over f2 and faster lens with all latest and greatest AI postprocessing!
Actually dead before arrival! And of course Sony or other vendor will not make law of economics broken. Just will go to bankrupt at some point or out of this market. There is no magical solution for camera companies to go back to their glory days against the smartphone.
You cannot assume that a solution exists. And Sony certainly wouldn’t make enough money off of it to justify its existence. Just like the horse and buggy makers couldn’t find a way to compete against cars, the camera companies are not going to be able to compete against the smartphone in any large mass market way. They can carve out a nice relatively high end niche for themselves though.
That is what they are attempting to do. Of course there is magical solution!!! This is the solution which for example make from struggling for decades company like Apple one of the richest!!! They found the right product and build around it whole ecosystem! Camera vendors did the same in the s and still dreaming for this times. But times are changing and if they do not find a way to produce and sell more desirable and appealing products they will go to ask Kodak how to proceed.
Raise of the price is just no solution, it just screw already screwed market even more. Same as Olympus, they are failing for decades but tried to produce monster of a camera like Em1x :. And even if they drop the price at half I will not buy it. And they are on mk7, they had a lot of time to fix it and make it better! Camera companies can’t just go and buy the same chips that smartphone vendors do and add Android software. That wouldn’t necessarily work for their type of gear, and that would also still require huge development costs. Even if you buy a chip from another vendor, you still need to engineer it to work with your product.
Also, because they couldn’t buy those chips in the same quantities as the smartphone companies, they would pay far more per chip. And if they did manage to make this work, then what? You’d still be left with the fact that most users prefer the ease of use and convenience of the smartphone rather than any dedicated camera.
Users will never perceive any dedicated camera as easier to use or carry than their smartphones. There is no going back and reclaiming the camera market from smartphones. The most camera makers can do is compete for a higher end niche. Yet the vast majority of users opt for smartphones.
The fact is that the market has shifted dramatically towards smartphones. That isn’t coming back. What remains are professionals and generally higher end enthusiasts. That is the market for the camera manufacturers. Dear TRU, Does not matter my flaws or cheap options on the market. BUT 2 At same point expensive smartphones are selling like hot cakes on very short cycles – every year new model!!! And their prices also grow! So the problem is not they have models with higher prices.
One of the problems with ILCs are tries to push everyone in format wagon. I can buy cheap smartphone with latest tech, and also I can get latest tech for high price. Low range ILCs are still at level. So in general you have point, but when we look at specific it is not exactly the case. For me the camera is a gold because it gives me the tilt-and-swivel screen, the battery, the twin card slots and the lifeline to carry on using all my legacy A mount glass via an affordable adapter.
If you are buying a camera for ISO 50K you are definitely in a specialized use. The reason is simple, in good light conditions all cameras are good, and some of my contracts lead me to shoot in very dark conditions people moving quickly dansing or playing music. The reason I took the left of the screen is that there is less light and faces because I don’t see the interest of shooting a newspaper but faces, mainly eyes with the shadows.
Also I use inside body jpegs because I have to process and give the photos asap. That said, with the R5 you have better tool than the A1 in low light. JPM29 I picked that sample because text offers good sharp small details to make the comparison more obvious.
Feel free to move around toward the darker ares, still the R6 images is the least sharp of the three. I have both R5 and A1, I used them both extensively for low light sports and events, I mean around to K images with each, and you want to lecture me with what you do not even have experience in using. I never had any problem with my e shutter and I use it most of the time.
For the rest, if you think that you see more detail in a dark photo, fine for you Btw it is simply impossible lifting shadows on my R5 in e- shutter at high iso, background banding is unacceptable. Do you shoot Raw or JPG? JPM29 if you cannot see a difference in details in the links I sent you you are bluntly on denial or you need glasses. Just look at the the text area on the tubes in the widget windows. Isn’t it about downsampling? So I suppose downsampling?
Then again it’s friday. But everyone who says the A7iii is the greatest for astro gets bashed infinity because downsampling. In the text at 12 the R6 and A7 are about equal, the A1 a bit above. In the colour tube : 1 R6, 2 A7, 3 A1 I never had to correct the shadows that much with my R6, if I had, I would use the mechanical shutter.
Look at the first link how the lady’s eye is dark with the A1 and clear with the R6, and the difference would be wider in real life. Becksvart, thanks, the eternal argument, “downsampling make the difference noise wise”, but I did not much in real life, and how to find details in the dark at high ISO? I guess there is a reason why astro photographers use the A7iii or R6 and not 50 MP cams. I prefer to use the good camera that the “we could”. The R6 gathers more light than the A7, A1, and R5.
Someone above mentioned an R5, and what you are saying is probably true. The R6 though is different because it only has 20MP. The way I like to explain it is the sensor but idk, I hate trying to explain something that I could be wrong about but whatever.
So the reason the R6 can gather more light is because the pixel are is greater than the pixel area of those other cameras.
But wait people say, they are all the same size, 35mm? The sensors are so good these days that they manufacture them with very little gap between them, better tolerance, and so now a days most people prefer to just get more pixels vs the better low light performance, which means a bunch of stuff, whatever is being talked about above. As good as it has gotten these days to where down sampling gets you close, it is not the same, but could be argued its in the who cares category.
So in closing, if I was going for Astro stuff specifically I would go R6, sports and lots of action all the time R6. Do not need to crop much, the R6. I see it as better performance for your hardware, on the Canon side, the R6 has the same hardware as the R5, so you can imagine what a beast that camera is.
Salgado, the R5 has more pixels but is noisier. For what I do, I would not exchange my cam against the R5 or the A1. So it also has whatever benefit that brings. BTW I think went off on many tangents like I always do. I personally have nothing against the A7 or Sony, it is not for me but that is ok, and then I went on promoting the R6, but I felt like this was turning into a debate about which one was better so I made my argument.
Canon’s are a real treat to use. The HUGE downside is how pricey Canon is, it is completely out of control, but nothing we can do about that.

Which is the reason for more shot noise in the image. Most probably this comes from the lens, or could be because on-site conditions. You need to learn what is shot noise. You can not use this images like this. Also many people told you already using ISO 50 – is nonsense. Your sensor has stop DR! And as I told you even RP will be good enough for this job. Differences in this range are negligible at best.

When conditions are not so difficult I use the 85mm 1. Then priority Aperture at 1. Sometimes I put the Iso on automatic, sometimes I can use the manual mode to control the opening and the speed, but rarely as I generally have to be at 1. I try to limit myself to or photos in the evening to limit post processing.
So I have to go at very high iso even if the photo is not technically perfect. These are some example of setting, it varies with each place, lighting, and dancers. Ohh man, we talk about real darkness here.
BTW of course you can control the speed. Most probably camera is trying to make absolute darkness looking as late afternoon. I would set manual all and paly only with ISO and aperture. As not trying to make darkness look bright and you should be at max even lower. I see same effect when shoot video at events and lights come down for some transitions. As you say the problem is the that light change all the time, the light temperature changes too, the dancers have different clothes, some reflecting the light, some notl, some faces are tanned, some very white, if you focus on the face it is different than a wider view if they wear dark clothes.
And they move quickly, not easy. Everybody can have his own technique, I prefer controlling the aperture than the speed because the camera may set it to 2 while I want 1. I do not use manual for dancers because the light changes too quickly. I do use it for singer where and when the light is more controlled.
I want to focus on the subjet, the light on the face, the right time to push on the button. I never use flash, it destroys the ambiance and I am just against it. Yes, baclight is very insteresting, we have to find the source of light, position ourself and wait a couple of dancers are well place to shoot.
Exactly because light changes all the time you do not like to adapt all the time! You like to have static all settings, as much as you can. WB for sure need to be static, and you can not leave camera to decide on white vs dark dress and etc. If you like to have natural ambiance and atmosphere you should not use camera as night vision :.
If atmosphere is dark frame should stay dark. Then later you can put some accent here and there half or full stop. With this cameras with boosting ISO you just loose DR and chance to get some highlights here and there. Does not matter brand or model. So better stay at or and save DR for some highlights if needed. Later in post you can light up the scene if needed. Just my 5 cents.
