The power to the laptop does not shut down when I shut down Windows, I have to manually turn off the power. At least for now, when I shut Windows down I can manually turn off the laptop a few seconds later. This laptop is almost always plugged in so I don’t worry about the battery. Thanks Susan, your reply has helped me to find a temporary solution. I hadn’t tried shutting my computer down since first experiencing this problem so did not know it is a power issue rather than a screen issue. Whether shutting down or putting it to sleep mode, the process does not complete.

The computer remains on until the battery is depleted.
