This transfer done in 2k is very old and was done for Sony’s hi-def channel way back when.

It’s obvious from frame one. I was so disappointed with the Image disc, but there’s a reason Image got the title and not Twilight Time and that reason is simple – it doesn’t pass muster anymore and Twilight Time is only given new 4K transfers and hopefully Sony’s Grover Crisp will get around to it at some point because the movie deserves that kind of treatment.

I suppose this movie contains a little of each. It left an impression upon me that lasted decades and is as potent today as when I first saw it. Kirk D. Knapp Reviewed in the United States on August 27, It was a fantastic movie from , and although most of the movie involved the interaction between only two people, a psychopathic Freddie Clegg and his captive, beautiful art student, Miranda Grey, it was exciting as each part of the movie unfolded.

Clegg follows Miranda, who is now his prey, as she walks home and then he kidnaps her. A superb performance by Samantha Eggar as Miranda was both dynamic and compelling as she tries to understand and counter Clegg’s psychopathic behavior as his prisoner. Terrence Stamp also gives an excellent performance as jailer Freddie Clegg as he disguises Clegg’s true madness until key parts of the movie, however it is Samantha Eggar’s superb performance that makes Miranda come alive and grab your heart and cause you care for Miranda’s wellbeing.

You want to help Miranda, but then you realize that she is alone with a madman and that you are only an observer and there is nothing you can do to help her. The key scene in the movie is where Clegg starts an argument with Miranda on the book “Catcher in the Rye” which is Miranda’s favorite book and he calls the book pointless.

Miranda defends the book only to find Clegg show excruciating anger as he realizes that Miranda has not fallen in love with him and today is the day that he has promised to free her. You cry for Miranda as Clegg storms out of the cellar, locking door behind him as a crying Miranda lays at the bottom of the door saying “O let me be free”.

Your expectations of Miranda’s wellbeing is now changing and you are not sure if she going to come out this ordeal alive.

The movie is full of these sort of twists as you watch Clegg descend into greater madness and become more of a threat to Miranda’s survival. There have been suggestions that the “The Collector” should be remade, but that is nonsense. William Wyler version is so superb that a remake would be nothing but disappointing as it is the definitive version of “The Collector” and likewise Samantha Eggar is the definitive Miranda Grey and Terence Stamp is the definitive Freddie Clegg.

Toward the very end of the movie, Samantha Eggar’s sensitive performance grabs you by the heart again, as a very ill Miranda try’s to convince Clegg take her to a hospital for medical treatment. Miranda says to Clegg, “that she doesn’t want to die because there is a painting that she wants to do” and then she describes the painting. At that point in her performance, tears begin to flow in Samantha Eggar’s eyes. As I watched the scene unfold, tears also formed in my eyes, as I considered Miranda’s situation.

It is also in color which utilizes Samantha Eggar’s beautiful face, exquisite auburn hair, and wonderful creamy complexion. I have purchased several copies just in case they stop producing this wonderful version of “The Collector” as it is movie that you will never forget, once you have seen it. Terence Stamp is a non-actor here, and often elsewhere, sadly.

A “gripping” film, but its ingredients are derivative, it plays on British and French film tropes for its very existence, yet is has. Worthwhile for serious scholars of s cinema history. And wonderful for British automobile fanatics. Although this film came out many years ago, I think it still holds up pretty well. You get to see a very young Terrance Stamp and a lovely, beautiful, young Samantha Eggar. I had the good fortune to travel onboard a cruise ship with Ms.

Eggar back in the s, specifically around Australia and Tasmania, I believe it was. I was a crew member and she was a passenger. As I had a few opportunities to talk to her, it made seeing this movie even more special to me. In the movie, Terrance Stamp collects butterflies and it appears that he’s also starting to collect beautiful ladies, beginning with Samantha Eggar.

Stamp’s character alternates between being passively and actively creepy. Certainly not a nice fellow! Not sure how well known this movie is here in the States, but it’s one which I can highly recommend as being a definite dramatic thriller.

Unfortunately, the third movie in this trilogy was under development for 8 days, when the producers suddenly pulled the plug on it.

The reason they gave was cryptic: “creative disinterest”. So sell the rights to someone that’s interested! As a fan, this stings a bit, seeing each film ends as a cliffhanger.

Of course, all that really means is that something in the news, or in a book, or just through the grapevine, sparked an idea for something quite different, but with perhaps certain similarities. Hence, my title for this review.

This movie borrows heavily from the Saw movies’ use of diabolical contraptions designed to kill and maim. I guess I’d be fine with that, had it done so while also creating an overall compelling plot line. For now, let’s forget about the myriad plot holes, and simply look at the basic story.

The writer and director failed to convince the viewer that this was truly leading anywhere. Instead, it was just a vehicle for presenting sadistic gore being doled out on innocent people by some maniac. There was no clear point or purpose to what this freak was doing to his victims– not even at the level of someone criminally psychotic.

It felt like Jigsaw took his act on the road, but forgot to bring any purpose along with him. On the plus side, the production values seemed rather high. Good cinematography, scenery, acting, music, and special effects. But the film overall never really drew me in.

To a degree, I was just glad that I finally made it to the end. My curiosity got the best of me, so I did, and found that I liked it far more. So I watched it at least twice, then revisited this movie, and wound up liking it far more than I did the first time.

Go figure. This was designed to be a trilogy of films, but I learned last night on Wiki that the producers started filming the third installment, but then abruptly stopped for no clear reason, putting that in limbo. For fans, that third movie really needs to be made to complete this story, seeing each one ends as a cliffhanger. This movie had a very original plot where we finally see a thief who is good at the bad things he does show his true nature and talent of working around the traps set by a psychopathic killer who is skilled at setting cunning yet sometimes ridiculous traps to “collect” the bodies of the people the protagonist originally intended to rob without harm.

The ending was a twist and i really felt it revolved too much on the killer who’s general background and face we were never introduced to, and left a cliff-hanger to why this coincidence pitted the two together and what happened to the thief’s family he was trying to save from the beginning.

Who the F is going to spend that much time putting those traps in place. The likelihood that they would actually be tripped are slim. It’s simply wasted effort. It makes no sense other than to entertain people watching a movie.

And when did he do it? Since the parents were home it must’ve been after they were caught. Then that makes it even a bigger waste of effort. Nonetheless, there are some entertaining moments. I still want to know what happens with his little girl. There is some character progression, but only in certain characters. It is a real gore fest, with plenty of torture and blood. But there are some real problems with the plot line. It starts during the day, and then the main character, Atkins, goes to rob the place that night after the parents were to have left.

He finds the place booby trapped with some insidious contraptions, and windows boarded up. How did all that happen in the space of a few short hours? And while fake, I could have done without the cat scene.

It required delicate maneuvering for Atkins to not set off the traps, but later he finds Hannah hiding in the house, and she apparently had no problems avoiding the traps. I consider that a plot hole, big time. At the end of the movie, the ambulance suffers a massive accident, and that looked totally fake.

There are other huge gaps in the ending that diminish the movie, and perhaps are setting up to make the villain a new character in a series of sequels. This was designed to be a trilogy of films, but I learned last night on Wiki that the producers started filming the third installment, but then abruptly stopped for no clear reason, putting that in limbo. For fans, that third movie really needs to be made to complete this story, seeing each one ends as a cliffhanger. This movie had a very original plot where we finally see a thief who is good at the bad things he does show his true nature and talent of working around the traps set by a psychopathic killer who is skilled at setting cunning yet sometimes ridiculous traps to “collect” the bodies of the people the protagonist originally intended to rob without harm.

The ending was a twist and i really felt it revolved too much on the killer who’s general background and face we were never introduced to, and left a cliff-hanger to why this coincidence pitted the two together and what happened to the thief’s family he was trying to save from the beginning. But there are some real problems with the plot line. It starts during the day, and then the main character, Atkins, goes to rob the place that night after the parents were to have left. He finds the place booby trapped with some insidious contraptions, and windows boarded up.

How did all that happen in the space of a few short hours? And while fake, I could have done without the cat scene. It required delicate maneuvering for Atkins to not set off the traps, but later he finds Hannah hiding in the house, and she apparently had no problems avoiding the traps.

It’s obvious from frame one. I was so disappointed with the Image disc, but there’s a reason Image got the title and not Twilight Time and that reason is simple – it doesn’t pass muster anymore and Twilight Time is only given new 4K transfers and hopefully Sony’s Grover Crisp will get around to it at some point because the movie deserves that kind of treatment.

But the infuriating thing is that idiot at DVD Beaver raving about how much better this Blu-ray is because it has a higher encode – beware anyone who uses that stupid word – discs are authored – that’s the lingo.
