Thanks for the reply, and that is a bit faster of a workaround than what i was using, but it still requires twice the clicks that it did in 1. What about selecting Pen mode and using the rubber band option. If the “Move Tool” is selected, then double click on a curve automatically switches to “Node Tool”.

So, there is absolutelly no need of the “Node Tool”. Peter Petrenko, I don’t think that is really relevant to my complaint. My issue is specifically with a change in functionality of the pen tool. Yes, I know. But it is nice to mention. Maybe it could be usefull to somebody else.

Jowday What OS are you using? The thing that is not possible is doing so with a Node that you defined earlier, as a Sharp Node. Aammppaa Windows 10 Professional – but the code involved shouldn’t be affected by the Windows version. Actually investigating the problem and comparing v1. Confirmed – it is a regression. Hopefully not changed and intended behavior.

In version 1. When you hover the nodes a minus symbol is displayed next to the pen tool. If you click and drag the node with the left button you can round and shape the tool. When you hover the node that closed the shape a minus symbol is displayed next to the pen tool.

Hovering ANY other node displays an The “Add new curves to existing curves” is always on when using the pen tool no matter if the toolbar button is selected or not. If this is intended behavior then There are several issues mentioned in this thread.

This is not the case as I demonstrated in my GIF. I asked about the OS since there are plenty of bugs that show up on Windows but not Mac, or vice versa. Jowday Thank you very much for confirming the problem and submitting the bug report. It’s nice to have confirmation of the change and hopefully this is just a bug and not an intended change as I initially assumed.

Oh sorry. I thought the thread was Windows only. Its both. You are right and the bug is not trivial. It is rather confusing. The changes made to the pen tool in 1. I was commenting on the others. I assumed squirrelfire knew what he was doing. He did. Jowday Sorry, I am unfamiliar with Gravit so I can’t compare. It is worth checking out if you love a great pen tool squirrelfire. Gravit Designer was free but now has both a free version and a paid version.

Corel now owns Gravit. Clever move. The pen tool is awesome and there is also a knife tool. I prefer brainstorming and constructing shapes in Designer and Gravit. Illustrators pen tool is not as good IMO. The cool this is that Gravit Designer runs in a browser and that you can save your work to their cloud storage paid version. The Pen tool on Affinity Designer is incredibly similar to other Pen tools you may have used elsewhere.

You should be able to start using it fairly easily — although there are some added features that set it apart. First, there’s the basic Pen mode. Smart mode will assist you in creating flowing curves that naturally arc. Polygon mode can be used to draw straight, connecting lines. Finally, Line mode is used to create lines that do not connect.

All have their own benefits and uses, and you can select the one you want using the icons shown in the image above. You’ve created a path using your Pen tool, you can adjust it using the conversion tools shown in the image above. These will enable you to do things like smooth a zig zag or make it jagged again. There are also a number of actions to choose from. With this mode enabled the tool will function according to the instructions we previously went over.

In Smart mode, the Pen Tool will automatically draw a soft, rounded path with no hard edges or corners:. This mode is sort of like training wheels for the Pen Tool. In Polygon mode you will only be able to draw straight lines that connect to corner nodes.

This mode will prevent you from drawing curved paths and rounded nodes:. This could be beneficial when tracing over a subject that consists entirely of hard edges and straight lines. You can draw these lines by tapping and swiping or by tapping once to place a point, then tapping again elsewhere to create another point that the line will connect to. However, it is a foundational tool when it comes to vector design, and knowing how to use it is crucial.

Thanks to some of the advancements in version 1.

Although Adobe Illustrator remains the industry favorite for vector-based design, Affinity Designer has proven itself to be a capable alternative. Made by British developer Serif, it doesn’t have the depth or the power of Illustrator, but it’s a comprehensive package all the same. And, of course, it costs a fraction of the price—a lifetime license costs less than some of Adobe’s monthly subscriptions.

If you do decide to make the leap to Affinity Designer, you’ll find at least some keyboard shortcuts are the same or similar to those in Illustrator. But there are differences too, including some Illustrator features that Designer doesn’t have an equivalent for. With this handy guide to Affinity Designer’s keyboard shortcuts, you can find your way around your new design software in no time. You will have to complete a short form to access it for the first time only.

Serif doesn’t only make vector design software. It also offers Affinity Photo, a decent and keenly priced alternative to Adobe Photoshop. If you want a full suite of design apps, this is probably one of the most affordable ways to get it. Combining Designer, Photo, and Publisher, you should be able to do pretty much anything you want. And using the shortcuts in our cheat sheet, it shouldn’t be too difficult either.
