Armchair Empire. As a standalone “episode” of Alan Wake, American Nightmare is something PC gamers should be checking out, particularly if the craziness of it appeals to you.

By rights, Alan Wake’s American Nightmare should be utterly underwhelming. The core game is changed not at all from its parent’s lukewarm style, the story is thin and hackneyed, hell it even has live-action cutscenes.

But somehow, the gameplay is challenging enough to keep you clicking that left mouse button and listening to that weird, not quite Rod Serling voice telling you to survive until morning just one more time. But just as its predecessor, it remains a game sentenced to struggle on the line between interaction and presentation, a space where compromises must be made by at least one of the sides, with the game proper still taking the larger hit.

Because when it comes to its interaction degree, Alan Wake really doesn’t have much more than a flashlight, a gun and, occasionally, a flashbang. When I started to play AWAN I was ready to see the continuation of Alaln’s journey not through real forests and real ppl, but through the place which won’t let you go so easy, the place filled with darkness and evil, the place for which Alan’s suffering as a loving husband who lost his wife, friend and normal life is the best food.

I was ready to see his struggle, and I saw it. He’s a writer, so his best weapon is his mind and typewriting machine. I think that the action that we’ve seen in AWAN is only his first attempt to run away from darkness, I’d even say – we’ve seen a draft of his new novel “Return”.

Advice – find all the pages to clearly understand all the things that happened in the story. AWAN is not a regular arcade game, it’s the game which can easily distract from main things with all the shooting, but the seeking one will find all the answers and new food for thought here. So be patient, be attentive.

Thankfully all the things that annoyed me about the original game control being temporarily wrenched away from the player every time enemies approached was the worst have gone from this follow-up. The story has an unusual, Groundhog Day structure which entails the player repeating tasks several times in an effort to defeat the main enemy, Mr Scratch.

I also liked the use of FMV cutscenes, which, sadly, are a rare thing these days it took me back to 90s — the heyday for FMV games.

Overall AWAN is an improvement on the original game. Alan Wake’s American Nightmare doesn’t pretend to be anything but a game and it succeeds very well at that. I even care more about the characters in this than the first one because they’re not trying so desperately hard. A very disappointing pseudo-sequel: completely unchallenging, no exploration required due to the minimap and somehow inferior graphically.

Worst it’s three small levels which you just play through three times EACH and they barely change from visit to visit.

The new wepaons are not just overpowerful but you get an absolute surfeit of ammo so never come close to running low on rounds or batteries. If you do play it I recomment using the Nightmare difficulty because Normal is actually insultingly easy. The DLC is simply terrible compared to the game but if you like the gun play mechanics of Alan Wake it can still be fun.

Both discs are included. When I first opened it there was a piece of paper with a code on it. I put the disc 1 in my PC, clicked install and it brought up my Steam software and asked for a key code. Well, I entered the whole code, not realizing the first line was Alan Wake, the second line was American Nightmare.

So, if you’re newer to PC games there’s something helpful. Just enter the first line of the code for Alan Wake. It works fine and now Alan Wake shows up in my Steam Games. Put disc 2 in and put the second line of code in for the key code and American Nightmare is now in my Steam Games.

It worked perfect. Really great deal for a classic game that’s slowly disappearing because of copyright issues with the music. I was worried about getting this since one reviewer said they had bought twice and couldn’t get key to work, but I had no issue at all. The top code is for the disc on the left, the bottom code is for the disc on the right.

If that doesn’t work, try it the other way. Anyway, it worked fine for me and I’m playing Alan Wake and enjoying it. As of this writing this is definitely the least expensive and perhaps only way since it’s not available on Steam to get this game. Check it out. Both discs are included. When I first opened it there was a piece of paper with a code on it. I put the disc 1 in my PC, clicked install and it brought up my Steam software and asked for a key code. Well, I entered the whole code, not realizing the first line was Alan Wake, the second line was American Nightmare. So, if you’re newer to PC games there’s something helpful. Just enter the first line of the code for Alan Wake. It works fine and now Alan Wake shows up in my Steam Games.

Put disc 2 in and put the second line of code in for the key code and American Nightmare is now in my Steam Games. It worked perfect. Really great deal for a classic game that’s slowly disappearing because of copyright issues with the music.

I was worried about getting this since one reviewer said they had bought twice and couldn’t get key to work, but I had no issue at all. The top code is for the disc on the left, the bottom code is for the disc on the right. If that doesn’t work, try it the other way.

Anyway, it worked fine for me and I’m playing Alan Wake and enjoying it. As of this writing this is definitely the least expensive and perhaps only way since it’s not available on Steam to get this game. Check it out.
