There is a fairly extensive opening book with annotations, which is a very nice easy way to familiarize yourself with lots of different opening systems without spending a ton of time or cash on books.

You can also solve puzzles, set up positions and then play them, or even play “blindfolded” if you’re into that. There’s a ton of chess “personalities” to play with too, including simulations of just about any famous grandmaster you can think of. There’s nothing quite like watching Kasparov and Fischer go head to head in bullet games. Overall it may not be the best or most up to date chess program, but it is very user friendly and has a wide variety of different features. If you looking for a way to start playing and learning chess, this is still one of the best investments you could possibly make.

Most versions of Setup. My Disc 1 just happens to have an earlier version of Setup. I just recently installed Chessmaster in my Windows 10 box, although I haven’t used it to verify that all features are working. I made several posts in the following thread related to the installation, but I thought it would be better to start a new thread so that the information didn’t remain hidden in the previous thread:. Nimzowitts mentioned that he had previously tried to install CM into Windows 10, but that not all of the features worked for his installation.

So, that’s the background – I expect Nimzowitts to be along shortly, and we’ll probably start with a discussion of which features aren’t working for him; Then I can check my install to see if I’m any better off than he is. Ok I found my CM Cd. No Joy! I used to at least be able to install the program on Windows 10 But no longer.

I blame Microsoft updates. I enabled legacy feature in the ‘turn windows features on or off’ box. Still no joy. Further I enabled the ‘Legacy ‘ feature from the ‘turn window features on or off’ box. No joy ther either.

Is your CM just one CD? Mine was a two-CD set in a jewel box, put out by Ubisoft. I don’t think I ever had to click on any setup. You just have to download the patches on the ubisoft site. There are lots of other use- designed patches you can download which add various features, though I have not checked those out yet.

This is still one of the best chess programs ever made, IMHO. There are lots of tutorials, annotated famous games, and over half a million master games in the database. There is a fairly extensive opening book with annotations, which is a very nice easy way to familiarize yourself with lots of different opening systems without spending a ton of time or cash on books. You can also solve puzzles, set up positions and then play them, or even play “blindfolded” if you’re into that.

There’s a ton of chess “personalities” to play with too, including simulations of just about any famous grandmaster you can think of. There’s nothing quite like watching Kasparov and Fischer go head to head in bullet games. Overall it may not be the best or most up to date chess program, but it is very user friendly and has a wide variety of different features. If you looking for a way to start playing and learning chess, this is still one of the best investments you could possibly make.

Where Chessmaster 10 excels is that it works perfectly on Windows 8 with no extra steps needed, and it is possible to patch 10 to not require the cd, which is a nice upgrade. Fritz is not able to give a good game at lower ratings, as it reaches those ratings by playing at the top of its game for some number of moves and then blundering horribly, which does not lead to enjoyable games.

Chessmaster tends to give you a game that feels much more like a game against a person with that rating. Fritz is supposedly slightly stronger than Chessmaster, but this difference does not matter unless you are a Grandmaster.

I also have Chessmaster loaded on the same PC and it works perfect. Right click on the Setup Icon and select “Run as Administrator. When I would attempt to launch the game, I would get a message “Log on as Administrator” and it would close out. From Ubisoft’s website you can easily find three patches for CM10th edition.

After I installed CM10th edition, I right clicked on each one of the patches separately and ran as Admin. After each patch it will prompt you to restart the PC so changes can take place.

Instead, I installed all three patches by right clicking each one after the other Then I restarted my machine. Without any CD in the computer I can now click on the CM10th edition icon on my desktop and it runs like a champ. So being a Chessmaster series fan from afar, I wanted the Chess Academy inside.
