On June 9, , Microsoft announced that its forums would no longer include Office or other products in extended support among its products for discussions involving support. Microsoft has stated that Office is not supported on Windows Development started in while Microsoft was finishing work on Office 14, released as Microsoft Office On January 30, , Microsoft released a technical preview of Office 15, build On July 16, , Microsoft held a press conference to showcase Office and to release the Consumer Preview.

Office was released to manufacturing on October 11, Office introduces Click-To-Run 2. Retail versions of Office use the Click-to-Run installer.

Office is more cloud -based than previous versions; a domain login, Office account, or Microsoft account can now be used to sync Office application settings including recent documents between devices, and users can also save documents directly to their OneDrive account. New features include a new read mode in Microsoft Word , a presentation mode in Microsoft PowerPoint and improved touch and inking in all of the Office programs. Microsoft Word can also insert video and audio from online sources as well as the capability to broadcast documents on the Web.

The Office Web Apps suite was also updated for Office , introducing additional editing features and interface changes. Unlike past versions of Office, retail copies of Office on DVD are only offered in select regions, such as those Microsoft classifies as emerging markets , as well as Australia , at the discretion of retailers. In all other regions, retail copies of Office and Office subscriptions only contain a product key , and direct users to the Office website to redeem their license and download the software.

The original license agreement for retail editions of Microsoft Office was different from the license agreements of retail editions of previous versions of Microsoft Office in two significant ways.

In previous versions of Office, this restriction applied only to OEM editions; retail Office license agreements allowed uninstalling from one computer to install on another computer. Digitally downloaded copies of Office were also said to be permanently locked to that PC’s hardware, preventing it from being transferred to any other computing device.

Should the buyer have wished to use Office on a different computer, or if they later became unable to use the computing device that the original license was downloaded to e. However, on March 6, , Microsoft announced that equivalent transfer rights to those in the Office retail license agreements are applicable to retail Office copies effective immediately.

Transfer of license from one computer to another owned by the same user is now allowed every 90 days, except in the case of hardware failure, in which the license may be moved sooner. The first user of the product is now also allowed to transfer it to another user. In previous versions of Office, this restriction also applied only to OEM editions; retail Office license agreements allowed installing the product on two or three computers, depending on the edition.

As with previous versions, Office is made available in several distinct editions aimed towards different markets. The Office subscription services, which were previously aimed towards business and enterprise users, were expanded for Office to include new plans aimed at home use.

The subscriptions allow use of the Office applications by multiple users using a software as a service model. Different plans are available for Office , some of which also include value-added services , such as 20 GB of OneDrive storage later increased to 1 TB and 60 Skype minutes per month on the new Home Premium plan. In Windows RT 8. The edition, whilst visually indistinguishable from normal versions of Office , contains special optimizations for ARM -based devices, such as changes to reduce battery usage including, for example, freezing the animation of the blinking cursor for text editing during periods of inactivity , enabling touch mode by default to improve usability on tablets, and using the graphics portion of a device’s SoC for hardware acceleration.

The release date for the final version varied depending on the user’s language, and was distributed through Windows Update when released. Office RT modifies or excludes other various features for compatibility reasons or resource reduction. To save disk space; templates, clip art, and language packs are downloaded online rather than stored locally. In comparison to their Windows Phone 7 versions, the new versions add an improved Office Hub interface that can sync recently opened and modified documents including changes to documents stored via Office and SkyDrive , [70] a separated OneNote app with additional features such as voice notes and integration with the new “Rooms” functionality of the OS , and improved document editing and viewing functionality.

In June , Microsoft released a version of Office Mobile for iPhone ; it is similar to the Windows Phone version, but originally requires an Office subscription to use. Apps for iPad and Android tablet computers were released in March and January , respectively.

Windows 10 Mobile that was released in December included new Office apps, more in line with their iPhone and Android equivalent, and making use of the “universal app” platform pioneered with Windows Each Microsoft Office application has the following requirements, although there may be app-specific requirements.

This made adventure games less attractive an investment for publishers; in contrast, the success of first-person shooters caused the console market to boom. The emergence of new distribution channels that did not rely on the traditional retail model would ultimately re-empower the niche genre.

Double Fine has since remastered the game for high definition graphics and re-released it through these channels. Although reviews for Jazz Jackrabbit 2 were positive, [] sales were insufficient and resulted in a loss for its publisher Gathering of Developers.

This prevented the developers from finding a publisher, thus leading to the cancelation of Jazz Jackrabbit 3 which could have been the franchise’s first 3D game.

Kingdoms was generally well-received by critics, and initial sales within the first three months were around 1. Though impressive, Rhode Island recognized that the title was expected to have hit 3 million units by this point for 38 Studios to pay back the loan.

The game was noted for taking place in almost complete real-time , using Art Nouveau -style characters that were rotoscoped from a day live-action video shoot, [] and featuring intelligent writing and levels of character depth that were not often seen in computer games. Mechner was later able to reacquire the rights to the game, and in , worked with DotEmu to release an iOS port of the title, before making it to Android as well.

The game was purposely designed as an extremely violent video game. Though there had been violent games available for the Wii from the day it was launched e. No More Heroes and Manhunt 2 , many perceived MadWorld as one of the first mature titles for the system, causing some initial outrage from concerned consumers about the normally family-friendly system. Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite is the sixth main installment in Capcom ‘s Marvel vs. Capcom series of fighting games that pits Capcom and Marvel ‘s famous characters against each other.

Capcom: Infinite to generate only half of the projected amount that Capcom gave. Capcom: Infinite ‘ s failing would lead to cancellation of DLC, and its exclusion from tournaments such as Evo , as well as Capcom being quiet surrounding the title.

Capcom 3. The game is favorably compared to a Zelda -type adventure, and is based on the quest of the goddess-wolf Amaterasu using a “celestial brush” to draw in magical effects on screen and to restore the cursed land of ancient Nippon. Released first in on the PlayStation 2, it later received a port to the Wii system, where the brush controls were reworked for the motion controls of the Wii Remote. After developing the rhythm game Gitaroo Man , iNiS Corporation began work on a more innovative one for the Nintendo DS that was based on an idea from founder Keiichi Yano , in which players would tap and drag on-screen targets in time with music to help an oendan cheer up people who are in trouble so that they can overcome their problems, which Nintendo released as Osu!

The game received positive reviews, leading to plans to develop a localized and upgraded reskin of the game titled Elite Beat Agents , as well as a sequel, Moero!

Nekketsu Rhythm Damashii Osu! Ouendan 2. Despite all three games being praised by critics, none of them were commercially successful, [] [] [] all selling less than a million copies each. Poor sales, as well as the uniqueness of their target platform, prevented Nintendo from considering further sequels. Starbreeze Studios had acquired a license in to develop a game set in The Walking Dead franchise from Skybound Entertainment , using the cooperative gameplay mechanics from Payday: The Heist developed by Starbreeze’s subsidiary Overkill Software.

The game fell into development hell namely due to demands from Starbreeze to switch game engines, first from the internally-developed Diesel Engine which had been used on the Payday games to the newly developed Valhalla Engine, which Starbreeze had acquired at a large cost, and later to the Unreal Engine after the Valhalla proved too difficult to work with. Having slipped its major release dates twice, the game was completed by November , but which the developers felt was under extreme rush and without sufficient quality review and testing.

Overkill’s The Walking Dead had mediocre reviews on release to Microsoft Windows, and only , units were sold within the month. Starbreeze had placed a significant amount of sales expectations behind the game, and with poor sales, the company placed plans to release the game on consoles on hold, and in December announced that it was restructuring due to a lack of liquidatable assets from the underperformance of Overkill’s The Walking Dead.

Starbreeze officially halted further development of the Windows version and cancelled the game’s planned console ports, while Skybound later cancelled the game entirely and pulled the license from Starbreeze. Though achieving notable critical success, [] including GameSpot ‘s Best Game No One Played award, [] Psychonauts sold fewer than , copies during its initial release.

However, today the game remains a popular title on various digital download services. The creator of Psychonauts , Tim Schafer, has a cult following due to his unique and eccentric style. Shenmue on the Dreamcast is more notorious for its overambitious budget than its poor sales figures. In comparison, the games’ total sale was 1. The second installment was eventually released in , but by this time the Dreamcast was floundering, so the game only saw a release in Japan and Europe.

Sega eventually released it for North American players for the Xbox , but the poor performance of both titles combined with restructuring have made Sega reluctant to complete the trilogy for fear of failure to return on the investment. Although both games received a negative reception, Rise of Lyric for the Wii U is particularly considered one of the worst video games of all time due to many glitches, poor gameplay and weak writing.

Both games failed commercially, selling only , copies as of February , making them the lowest-selling games in the Sonic franchise. A side-scrolling endless runner , it was Sonic Team ‘s first Sonic game that was exclusive to smartphones.

Nintendo Life wrote its failure was proof that the recognizability of a brand does not guarantee success. Sunset , a first-person exploration adventure game involving a housekeeper working for a dictator of a fictional country, was developed by two-person Belgian studio Tale of Tales , who previously had created several acclaimed arthouse style games and other audio-visual projects such as The Path.

They wanted to make Sunset a “game for gamers” while still retaining their arthouse-style approach, and in addition to planning on a commercial release, used Kickstarter to gain funding. Sunset only sold about copies on its release, including those to Kickstarter backers. Tale of Tales opted to close their studio after sinking the company’s finances into the game, and believed that if they did release any new games in the future, they would likely shy away from commercial release.

System Shock 2 was the sequel to the immersive sim System Shock. System Shock was critically praised and had modest sales. Irrational Games was formed in by three former Looking Glass employees, and Looking Glass approached Irrational about co-developing a game like System Shock , and after several iterations, came to the idea of a direct sequel. System Shock 2 was similarly met with critical praise at release and was named as Game of the Year by several publications, [] but did not sell well, with only about 58, copies selling within eight months of release.

Instead, Irrational set out to develop a game as a spiritual successor to the gameplay concepts of System Shock but without using the property, resulting in their title BioShock. The fourth game in the popular Myst series , released in It was developed by Cyan Worlds shortly after Riven was completed. Though it had generally positive reception, [] [] the sales were disappointing. Released by Atari in , I, Robot was the first video game to use 3-D polygon graphics, [ citation needed ] and the first that allowed the player to change camera angles.

Production estimates vary, but all agree that there were no more than units made. In , the President of Cinematronics arranged a one-time purchase of printed circuit boards from Japan.

The boards were used in the manufacture of several games, but the majority of them were reserved for the new arcade game Jack the Giantkiller , based on the classic fairy tale Jack and the Beanstalk. Between the purchase price of the boards and other expenses, Cinematronics invested almost two million dollars into Jack the Giantkiller.

It completely flopped in the arcade and many of the boards went unsold, costing the company a huge amount of money at a time when it was already having financial difficulties. Radar Scope was one of the first arcade games released by Nintendo. It was released in Japan first, and a brief run of success there led Nintendo to order 3, units for the American market in American operators were unimpressed, however, and Nintendo of America was stuck with about 2, unsold Radar Scope machines sitting in the warehouse.

Facing a potential financial disaster, Nintendo assigned the game’s designer, Shigeru Miyamoto , to revamp the game. Instead he designed a brand new game that could be run in the same cabinets and on the same hardware as Radar Scope.

Sundance was an arcade vector game released in Producer Cinematronics planned to manufacture about Sundance units, but sales suffered from a combination of poor gameplay and an abnormally high rate of manufacturing defects.

JSTOR S2CID Lack of distribution may have contributed significantly to the failure of the Sega Saturn to gain an installed base. Sega had limited distribution for its Saturn launch, which may have slowed the building of its installed base both directly because consumers had limited access to the product and indirectly because distributors that were initially denied product may have been reluctant to promote the product after the limitations were lifted. Nintendo, by contrast, had unlimited distribution for its Nintendo 64 launch, and Sony not only had unlimited distribution, but had extensive experience with negotiating with retailing giants such as Wal-Mart for its consumer electronics products.

Affiliate marketing is a type of performance-based marketing in which a business rewards one or more affiliates for each visitor or customer brought by the affiliate’s own marketing efforts. Affiliate marketing may overlap with other Internet marketing methods, including organic search engine optimization SEO , paid search engine marketing PPC — Pay Per Click , e-mail marketing , content marketing , and display advertising.

Affiliate marketing is frequently overlooked by advertisers. Still, affiliates continue to play a significant role in e-retailers’ marketing strategies. The concept of revenue sharing —paying commission for referred business—predates affiliate marketing and the Internet.

The translation of the revenue share principles to mainstream e-commerce happened in November , almost four years after the origination of the World Wide Web. The concept of affiliate marketing on the Internet was conceived of, put into practice and patented by William J.

Tobin applied for a patent on tracking and affiliate marketing on January 22, , and was issued U. Patent number 6,, on Oct 31, Tobin also received Japanese Patent number on Oct 5, , and U.

Patent number 7,, on Mar 17, , for affiliate marketing and tracking. CDNow had the idea that music-oriented websites could review or list albums on their pages that their visitors might be interested in purchasing. These websites could also offer a link that would take visitors directly to CDNow to purchase the albums. The idea for remote purchasing originally arose from conversations with music label Geffen Records in the fall of The management at Geffen wanted to sell its artists’ CD’s directly from its website but did not want to implement this capability itself.

Geffen realized that CDNow could link directly from the artist on its website to Geffen’s website, bypassing the CDNow home page and going directly to an artist’s music page. When visitors clicked on the associate’s website to go to Amazon and purchase a book, the associate received a commission.

Amazon was not the first merchant to offer an affiliate program, but its program was the first to become widely known and serve as a model for subsequent programs. In February , Amazon announced that it had been granted a patent [16] on components of an affiliate program.

Affiliate marketing has grown quickly since its inception. The e-commerce website, viewed as a marketing toy in the early days of the Internet, became an integrated part of the overall business plan and in some cases grew to a bigger business than the existing offline business. In , the most active sectors for affiliate marketing were the adult gambling, retail industries and file-sharing services.

Also several of the affiliate solution providers expect to see increased interest from business-to-business marketers and advertisers in using affiliate marketing as part of their mix. Websites and services based on Web 2.

These platforms allow improved communication between merchants and affiliates. Web 2. Contextual ads allow publishers with lower levels of web traffic to place affiliate ads on websites.

Forms of new media have also diversified how companies, brands, and ad networks serve ads to visitors. For instance, YouTube allows video-makers to embed advertisements through Google’s affiliate network.

Emerging black sheep are detected and made known to the affiliate marketing community with much greater speed and efficiency. Eighty percent of affiliate programs today use revenue sharing or pay per sale PPS as a compensation method, nineteen percent use cost per action CPA , and the remaining programs use other methods such as cost per click CPC or cost per mille CPM, cost per estimated views.

Within more mature markets, less than one percent of traditional affiliate marketing programs today use cost per click and cost per mille. However, these compensation methods are used heavily in display advertising and paid search. Cost per mille requires only that the publisher make the advertising available on his or her website and display it to the page visitors in order to receive a commission. Pay per click requires one additional step in the conversion process to generate revenue for the publisher: A visitor must not only be made aware of the advertisement but must also click on the advertisement to visit the advertiser’s website.

Cost per click was more common in the early days of affiliate marketing but has diminished in use over time due to click fraud issues very similar to the click fraud issues modern search engines are facing today. Contextual advertising programs are not considered in the statistic pertaining to the diminished use of cost per click, as it is uncertain if contextual advertising can be considered affiliate marketing. While these models have diminished in mature e-commerce and online advertising markets they are still prevalent in some more nascent industries.

China is one example where Affiliate Marketing does not overtly resemble the same model in the West. This leaves the greater, and, in case of cost per mille, the full risk and loss if the visitor cannot be converted to the advertiser. The advertiser must convert that visitor first. It is in the best interest of the affiliate to send the most closely targeted traffic to the advertiser as possible to increase the chance of a conversion.

The risk is absorbed by the affiliate who funnels their traffic to the campaign normally a landing page. In the case a conversion is not fired the publisher won’t receive any compensation for the traffic. Affiliate marketing is also called “performance marketing”, in reference to how sales employees are typically being compensated.

Such employees are typically paid a commission for each sale they close, and sometimes are paid performance incentives for exceeding objectives. The phrase, “Affiliates are an extended sales force for your business”, which is often used to explain affiliate marketing, is not completely accurate.

The primary difference between the two is that affiliate marketers provide little if any influence on a possible prospect in the conversion process once that prospect is directed to the advertiser’s website. The sales team of the advertiser, however, does have the control and influence up to the point where the prospect either a signs the contract, or b completes the purchase.

Some advertisers offer multi-tier programs that distribute commission into a hierarchical referral network of sign-ups and sub-partners. In practical terms, publisher “A” signs up to the program with an advertiser and gets rewarded for the agreed activity conducted by a referred visitor. If publisher “A” attracts publishers “B” and “C” to sign up for the same program using his sign-up code, all future activities performed by publishers “B” and “C” will result in additional commission at a lower rate for publisher “A”.

Two-tier programs exist in the minority of affiliate programs; most are simply one-tier. Merchants favor affiliate marketing because in most cases it uses a “pay for performance” model, meaning that the merchant does not incur a marketing expense unless results are accrued excluding any initial setup cost.

Some merchants run their own in-house affiliate programs using dedicated software, while others use third-party intermediaries to track traffic or sales that are referred from affiliates.

There are two different types of affiliate management methods used by merchants: standalone software or hosted services , typically called affiliate networks. Payouts to affiliates or publishers can be made by the networks on behalf of the merchant, by the network, consolidated across all merchants where the publisher has a relationship with and earned commissions or directly by the merchant itself.

Uncontrolled affiliate programs aid rogue affiliates, who use spamming , [24] trademark infringement , false advertising , cookie stuffing , typosquatting , [25] and other unethical methods that have given affiliate marketing a negative reputation.

Some merchants are using outsourced affiliate program management OPM companies, which are themselves often run by affiliate managers and network program managers. Affiliate websites are often categorized by merchants advertisers and affiliate networks. There are currently no industry-wide standards for the categorization.

The following types of websites are generic, yet are commonly understood and used by affiliate marketers. Affiliate networks that already have several advertisers typically also have a large pool of publishers. These publishers could be potentially recruited, and there is also an increased chance that publishers in the network apply to the program on their own, without the need for recruitment efforts by the advertiser.

Relevant websites that attract the same target audiences as the advertiser but without competing with it are potential affiliate partners as well. Vendors or existing customers can also become recruits if doing so makes sense and does not violate any laws or regulations such as with pyramid schemes. Almost any website could be recruited as an affiliate publisher, but high traffic websites are more likely interested in for their sake low-risk cost per mille or medium-risk cost per click deals rather than higher-risk cost per action or revenue share deals.

Since the emergence of affiliate marketing, there has been little control over affiliate activity. Unscrupulous affiliates have used spam , false advertising , forced clicks to get tracking cookies set on users’ computers , adware , and other methods to drive traffic to their sponsors.

Although many affiliate programs have terms of service that contain rules against spam , this marketing method has historically proven to attract abuse from spammers. In the infancy of affiliate marketing, many Internet users held negative opinions due to the tendency of affiliates to use spam to promote the programs in which they were enrolled. A browser extension is a plug-in that extends the functionality of a web browser. Most modern web browsers have a whole slew of third-party extensions available for download.

In recent years, there has been a constant rise in the number of malicious browser extensions flooding the web. Malicious browser extensions will often appear to be legitimate as they seem to originate from vendor websites and come with glowing customer reviews.

Typically, users are completely unaware this is happening other than their browser performance slowing down. Websites end up paying for fake traffic numbers, and users are unwitting participants in these ad schemes. As search engines have become more prominent, some affiliate marketers have shifted from sending e-mail spam to creating automatically generated web pages that often contain product data feeds provided by merchants.

The goal of such web pages is to manipulate the relevancy or prominence of resources indexed by a search engine, also known as spamdexing. Each page can be targeted to a different niche market through the use of specific keywords, with the result being a skewed form of search engine optimization.

Spam is the biggest threat to organic search engines, whose goal is to provide quality search results for keywords or phrases entered by their users. Google ‘s PageRank algorithm update “BigDaddy” in February —the final stage of Google’s major update “Jagger” that began in mid-summer —specifically targeted spamdexing with great success. This update thus enabled Google to remove a large amount of mostly computer-generated duplicate content from its index.

Websites consisting mostly of affiliate links have previously held a negative reputation for underdelivering quality content. In there were active changes made by Google, where certain websites were labeled as “thin affiliates”. To avoid this categorization, affiliate marketer webmasters must create quality content on their websites that distinguishes their work from the work of spammers or banner farms, which only contain links leading to merchant sites.

Although it differs from spyware , adware often uses the same methods and technologies. Merchants initially were uninformed about adware, what impact it had, and how it could damage their brands. Affiliate marketers became aware of the issue much more quickly, especially because they noticed that adware often overwrites tracking cookies, thus resulting in a decline of commissions.

Affiliates not employing adware felt that it was stealing commission from them. Affiliates discussed the issues in Internet forums and began to organize their efforts.

They believed that the best way to address the problem was to discourage merchants from advertising via adware. Merchants that were either indifferent to or supportive of adware were exposed by affiliates, thus damaging those merchants’ reputations and tarnishing their affiliate marketing efforts.

Many affiliates either terminated the use of such merchants or switched to a competitor’s affiliate program. Eventually, affiliate networks were also forced by merchants and affiliates to take a stand and ban certain adware publishers from their network. Affiliates were among the earliest adopters of pay per click advertising when the first pay-per-click search engines emerged during the end of the s. Later in Google launched its pay per click service, Google AdWords , which is responsible for the widespread use and acceptance of pay per click as an advertising channel.

An increasing number of merchants engaged in pay per click advertising, either directly or via a search marketing agency, and realized that this space was already occupied by their affiliates. Although this situation alone created advertising channel conflicts and debates between advertisers and affiliates, the largest issue concerned affiliates bidding on advertisers names, brands, and trademarks.

Microsoft publisher 2013 vs 2016 free

Microsoft Office codenamed Office 15 [6] is a version of Microsoft Office , a productivity suite for Microsoft Windows. It is the successor to Microsoft Office and the predecessor to Microsoft Office Unlike its predecessor, no OS X equivalent was released. Microsoft Office includes extended file format support, user interface updates and support for touch among its new features and is suitable for IA and x64 systems.

Development on this version of Microsoft Office was started in and ended on October 11, , when Microsoft Office was released to manufacturing. Microsoft Office comes in twelve different editions, including three editions for retail outlets, two editions for volume licensing channel, five subscription-based editions available through Microsoft Office program, the web application edition known as Office Web Apps and the Office RT edition made for tablets and mobile devices.

Office Web Apps are available free of charge on the web although enterprises may obtain on-premises installations for a price. Microsoft Office applications may be obtained individually; this includes Microsoft Visio , Microsoft Project and Microsoft SharePoint Designer which are not included in any of the twelve editions.

Microsoft Office , or simply Office , is a family of client software , server software , and services developed by Microsoft. Initially a marketing term for an office suite bundled set of productivity applications , the first version of Office contained Microsoft Word , Microsoft Excel , and Microsoft PowerPoint.

Over the years, Office applications have grown substantially closer with shared features such as a common spell checker, Object Linking and Embedding data integration and Visual Basic for Applications scripting language. Microsoft also positions Office as a development platform for line-of-business software under the Office Business Applications brand.

It contains a word processor Word , a spreadsheet program Excel and a presentation program PowerPoint , an email client Outlook , a database management system Access , and a desktop publishing app Publisher. Office is produced in several versions targeted towards different end-users and computing environments.

The original, and most widely used version, is the desktop version, available for PCs running the Windows and macOS operating systems. Microsoft also maintains mobile apps for Android and iOS. Office on the web is a version of the software that runs within a web browser. Since Office , Microsoft has promoted Office as the primary means of obtaining Microsoft Office: it allows the use of the software and other services on a subscription business model , and users receive feature updates to the software for the lifetime of the subscription, including new features and cloud computing integration that are not necessarily included in the “on-premises” releases of Office sold under conventional license terms.

In , revenue from Office overtook conventional license sales. Microsoft also rebranded most of their standard Office editions into Microsoft to emphasize their current inclusion of products and services. Office on the web is a free lightweight web version of Microsoft Office and primarily includes three web applications: Word , Excel and PowerPoint. The offering also includes Outlook. They can also open the older Office file formats doc , xls, ppt , but will be converted to the newer Open XML formats if the user wishes to edit them online.

Files with macros can be opened in the browser apps, but the macros cannot be accessed or executed. Office on the web lacks a number of the advanced features present in the full desktop versions of Office, including lacking the programs Access and Publisher entirely. However, users are able to select the command “Open in Desktop App” that brings up the document in the desktop version of Office on their computer or device to utilize the advanced features there.

The Personal edition of Office on the web is available to the general public free of charge with a Microsoft account through the Office. Enterprise-managed versions are available through Office There are free extensions available to use Office on the web directly in Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge. Most versions of Microsoft Office including Office 97 and later use their own widget set and do not exactly match the native operating system.

This is most apparent in Microsoft Office XP and , where the standard menus were replaced with a colored, flat-looking, shadowed menu style. The user interface of a particular version of Microsoft Office often heavily influences a subsequent version of Microsoft Windows. Users of Microsoft Office may access external data via connection-specifications saved in Office Data Connection.

Office, on all platforms, support editing both server files in real time and offline files manually saved in the recent years.

The support for editing server files in real time was originally introduced in its current form after the introduction of OneDrive formerly SkyDrive. But, older versions of Office also have the ability to edit server files notably Office Both Windows and Office used service packs to update software. Office had non-cumulative service releases , which were discontinued after Office Service Release 1.

Now, Windows and Office have shifted to predictable monthly, semi-annual and annual release schemes to update software. Past versions of Office often contained Easter eggs. For example, Excel 97 contained a reasonably functional flight-simulator. Microsoft has granted patent rights to the formats technology under the Open Specification Promise [41] and has made available free downloadable converters for previous versions of Microsoft Office including Office , Office XP, Office [42] and Office for Mac OS X.

Microsoft provides the ability to remove metadata from Office documents. This was in response to highly publicized incidents where sensitive data about a document was leaked via its metadata. A major feature of the Office suite is the ability for users and third-party companies to write add-ins plug-ins that extend the capabilities of an application by adding custom commands and specialized features.

One of the new features is the Office Store. The app travels with the document, and it is for the developer to decide what the recipient will see when they open it. The recipient will either have the option to download the app from the Office Store for free, start a free trial or be directed to payment.

The apps that employees have personally downloaded will appear under My Apps. Users can use apps to amplify the functionality of a document, email message, meeting request, or appointment.

Apps can run in multiple environments and by multiple clients, including rich Office desktop clients, Office Web Apps, mobile browsers, and also on-premises and in the cloud. The password can contain up to characters and uses AES bit advanced encryption by default. Due to lack of document encryption, though, these passwords can be removed using a third-party cracking software. All versions of Microsoft Office products from Office to Office are eligible for ten years of support following their release, during which Microsoft releases security updates for the product version and provides paid technical support.

The ten-year period is divided into two five-year phases: The mainstream phase and the extended phase. During the mainstream phase, Microsoft may provide limited complimentary technical support and release non-security updates or change the design of the product.

During the extended phase, said services stop. Beginning with Mac Office 4. Difficulties in porting Office may have been a factor in discontinuing Windows NT on non-Intel platforms. The Microsoft Office applications and suites are sold via retail channels, and volume licensing for larger organizations also including the “Home Use Program”.

In , Microsoft introduced a software as a service platform known as Office , to provide cloud -hosted versions of Office’s server software, including Exchange e-mail and SharePoint, on a subscription basis competing in particular with Google Apps. Microsoft has since promoted Office as the primary means of purchasing Microsoft Office. Although there are still “on-premises” releases roughly every three years, Microsoft marketing emphasizes that they do not receive new features or access to new cloud-based services as they are released unlike Office , as well as other benefits for consumer and business markets.

Microsoft Office is available in several editions, which regroup a given number of applications for a specific price. Primarily, Microsoft sells Office as Microsoft The editions are as follows:.

Post-secondary students may obtain the University edition of Microsoft Office subscription. It is limited to one user and two devices, plus the subscription price is valid for four years instead of just one.

Apart from this, the University edition is identical in features to the Home Premium version. This marks the first time Microsoft does not offer physical or permanent software at academic pricing, in contrast to the University versions of Office and Office In addition, students eligible for DreamSpark program may receive select standalone Microsoft Office apps free of charge. Microsoft Office has been criticized in the past for using proprietary file formats rather than open standards , which forces users who share data into adopting the same software platform.

Ecma International has published the Office Open XML specification free of copyrights and Microsoft has granted patent rights to the formats technology under the Open Specification Promise [74] and has made available free downloadable converters for previous versions of Microsoft Office including Office , Office XP, Office and Office for the Mac.

Another point of criticism Microsoft Office has faced was the lack of support in its Mac versions for Unicode and Bi-directional text languages, notably Arabic and Hebrew. This issue, which had existed since the first release in , was addressed in the version. In addition, the company does not provide users of its Office software an option to turn off diagnostic and telemetry data sent back to the company.

Researchers found that most of the data that the Microsoft software collects and “sends home” is diagnostics. However, they discovered the software packages collected additional data that contained private user information, some of which was stored on servers located in the US. Covertly, without informing people”, researchers of the Privacy Company stated in their blog post.

The researchers commented that there is no need for Microsoft to store information such as IPs and email addresses, which are collected automatically by the software. As a result of this in-depth study and its conclusions, the Netherlands regulatory body concluded that Microsoft has violated GDPR “on many counts” including “lack of transparency and purpose limitation, and the lack of a legal ground for the processing.

The Dutch regulatory body is monitoring the situation and states that “If progress is deemed insufficient or if the improvements offered are unsatisfactory, SLM Microsoft Rijk will reconsider its position and may ask the Data Protection Authority to carry out a prior consultation and to impose enforcement measures.

We appreciate the opportunity to discuss our diagnostic data handling practices in Office ProPlus with the Dutch Ministry of Justice and look forward to a successful resolution of any concerns. The list of commercial failures in video games includes any video game software on any platform, and any video game console hardware, of all time. As a hit-driven business, the great majority of the video game industry ‘s software releases have been commercial disappointments. Some of these failure events have drastically changed the video game market since its origin in the late s.

For example, the failure of E. Some games, though commercial failures, are well received by certain groups of gamers and are considered cult games. Co-designed by R. Mical and the team behind the Amiga , and marketed by Electronic Arts founder Trip Hawkins , this “multimedia machine” released in was marketed as a family entertainment device and not just a video game console.

The success of subsequent next generation systems led to the platform’s demise and the company’s exit from the hardware market. In , Amstrad attempted to enter the console video game market with hardware based on its successful Amstrad CPC range but also capable of playing cartridge-based games with improved graphics and sound.

However, only a few months later the Mega Drive , a much-anticipated bit console, was released in Europe, and the GX’s aging 8-bit technology proved uncompetitive. Many of the games are direct ports of existing CPC games available more cheaply on tape or disc with few if any graphical improvements. Fewer than thirty games were released on cartridge, and the GX’s failure ended Amstrad’s involvement in the video game industry.

It featured a 4x CD-ROM drive and a video output that could connect to a standard television monitor. Apple intended to license the technology to third parties; however, only two companies signed on, Bandai and Katz Media, [8] while the only Pippin license to release a product to market was Bandai’s.

By the time the Bandai Pippin was released in Japan , in the United States , the market was already dominated by the Nintendo 64 and PlayStation. Total sales were only around 42, units. The Atari was created as the successor to the highly successful Atari Reasons for the console’s poor reception include that most of the games were simply enhanced versions of those played on its predecessor [10] and the awkward design of the controllers, which themselves were also prone to breaking down.

The console sold only a little over a million units. Nonetheless, the failure of the Atari marked the beginning of Atari’s fall in the console business. Released by Atari Corporation in , this bit system was more powerful than its contemporaries, the Genesis and the Super NES hence its “Do the Math” slogan ; however, its sales were hurt by a lack of software and a number of crippling business practices on the part of Atari senior management.

The controller was widely criticized as being too big and unwieldy, with a baffling number of buttons. The system never attained critical mass in the market before the release of the PlayStation and Sega Saturn , and without strong leadership to drive a recovery, it failed and brought the company down with it. The Lynx was the second handheld game system to be released with the Atari name.

The system was originally developed by Epyx as the Handy Game. In , Atari Corporation collapsed due to the failures of the Lynx and Jaguar consoles. Released only in Europe in , the C64GS was basically a Commodore 64 redesigned as a cartridge-based console.

Aside from some hardware issues, the console did not get much attention from the public, who preferred to buy the cheaper original computer that had far more possibilities.

Also, the console appeared just as the bit era was starting, which left no chance for it to succeed as it was unable to compete with consoles like the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and Mega Drive. In common with the Philips CD-i and the 3DO, the CDTV was intended as an all-in-one home multimedia appliance that would play games, music, movies, and other interactive content.

The name was short for “Commodore Dynamic Total Vision”. The hardware was based on the Amiga computer with a single-speed CD-ROM drive rather than a floppy disk drive, in a case that was designed to integrate unobtrusively with a home entertainment center.

However, the expected market for home multimedia appliances did not materialize, and the CDTV was discontinued in , [21] having sold only 30, units. The Dreamcast, released globally in , was Sega’s final console before the company focused entirely on software. Although the console was initially successful and management in the company improved significantly after harsh lessons were learned from the Sega Saturn fiasco, the console also faced stiff competition from the technically superior PlayStation 2 despite being in the market over a year ahead.

The Dreamcast sold less than the Saturn, coming in at 9. The Fairchild Channel F was a second generation console released in , and the first home console unit to use interchangeable video game cartridges. It had respectable sales within its first year on the market, but soon faced competition from the Atari , another cartridge-based system that was released in September Whereas the Channel F’s games were generally based on intellectual and educational concepts, Atari had crafted games that were conversions of their action-based arcade video game hits, and were more popular, making the Atari the more popular system.

Throughout its few years in the market, the console sold an underwhelming 45, units. With poor promotion, few games only fourteen were ever released , short battery life, a small screen, competition from the cheaper and more reputable Nintendo DS and PSP , and controversy surrounding the company, the system was a commercial failure.

Several high-ranking Tiger executives were subsequently arrested for fraud and other illegal activities related to the Gizmondo. Tiger Telematics went bankrupt when it was discontinued in February , just 11 months after it was released. Released in late by Mattel , the HyperScan was the company’s first video game console since the Intellivision. It used radio frequency identification RFID [31] along with traditional video game technology.

The system was sold in two varieties, a cube, and a 2-player value pack. The cube box version was the version sold in stores. It included the system, controller, an X-Men game disc, and 6 X-Men cards. Two player value packs were sold online but may have been liquidated in stores and included an extra controller and 12 additional X-Men cards. The front-loading version was the original console design, with the top-loading version developed shortly before the Neo Geo CD launch as a scaled-down, cheaper alternative model.

The Neo Geo CD had met with limited success due to it being plagued with slow loading times that could vary from 30 to 60 seconds between loads, depending on the game. Although SNK’s American home entertainment division quickly acknowledged that the system simply was unable to compete with the 3D-able powerhouse systems of the day like Nintendo ‘s 64 , Sega ‘s Saturn and Sony ‘s PlayStation , SNK corporate of Japan felt they could continue to maintain profitable sales in the Japanese home market by shortening the previous system’s load-times.

The two handheld video game consoles, created by SNK , were released between through markets dominated by Nintendo. The Neo Geo Pocket is considered to be an unsuccessful console, as it was immediately succeeded by the Color, a full color device allowing the system to compete more easily with the dominant Game Boy Color handheld, and which also saw a western release. Though the system enjoyed only a short life, there were some significant games released on the system. After a good sales start in both the U.

It was SNK’s last video game console, as the company went bust on October 22, A disk drive add-on and Internet appliance for the Nintendo 64 , it was first announced at ‘s Nintendo Shoshinkai game show event now called Nintendo World.

The 64DD was repeatedly and notoriously delayed until its release in Japan on December 1, Nintendo, anticipating poor sales, sold the 64DD through mail order and bundled with its Randnet dialup subscription service instead of directly to retailers or consumers. As a result, the 64DD was supported by Nintendo for only a short period of time and only nine games were released for it. It was never released outside Japan.

Most 64DD games were either canceled entirely, released as normal Nintendo 64 cartridges or ported to other systems such as Nintendo’s next-generation GameCube.

Upon announcement of the cancellation of Randnet in , Nintendo reported a total of 15, current 64DD users on Randnet.

Common complaints included the difficulty of swapping games the cartridge slot was located beneath the battery slot, requiring its removal and the fact that its cellphone feature required users to hold the device “sideways” i.

However, the N-Gage brand still suffered from a poor reputation and the QD did not address the popular complaint that the control layout was “too cluttered”. In November , Nokia announced the failure of its product, in light of poor sales fewer than three million units sold during the platform’s three-year run, against projections of six million.

Nokia ceased to consider gaming a corporate priority until , when it expected improved screen sizes and quality to increase demand. The idea was that a manufacturer could use the chip instead of an existing MPEG-2 decoder, thus turning a DVD player into a game console. A year after launch only eight games were available. The Ouya is an Android -based microconsole released in by Ouya, Inc.

Even though the Ouya was a success on Kickstarter , the product was plagued by problems from the beginning. The console’s bit architecture was created in , and by it was outdated, largely due to the fact that it was unable to create 3D images, instead utilizing an architecture that relied on JPEG video.

The PC-FX was severely underpowered compared to other fifth generation consoles and had a very low budget marketing campaign, with the system never managing to gain a foothold against its competition or a significant part of the marketshare. Around this time, NEC announced that they had only sold , units with a library of only 62 titles, most of which were dating sims.

Nintendo, however, did give Philips the rights and permission to use five Nintendo characters for the CD-i games. All four of these Nintendo-themed games are commonly cited by critics as being among the worst ever made. Much criticism was also aimed at the CD-i’s controller. Sales began to slow down by , and in , Philips announced that the product had been discontinued.

In all, roughly , units were sold, [69] with games released. Made by Pioneer Corporation in a clone was produced by NEC as well , the LaserActive employed the trademark LaserDiscs as a medium for presenting games and also played the original LaserDisc movies.

The LaserActive was quietly discontinued one year later after total sales of roughly 10, units. Like the Nintendo systems, the PlayStation Classic was presented as a smaller form factor of the original PlayStation preloaded with 20 games.

The system was heavily criticized at launch. For nine of the games, it used PAL versions favored in European markets rather than NTSC , meaning they ran at a slower 50 Hz clock compared to the 60 Hz used in the Americas, which caused notable frame rate problems and impacted the gameplay style for some of the more highly-interactive titles.

The emulation also lacked the feature set that Nintendo had set with its microconsoles. Some of these absences were attributed to intellectual rights for example, Activision holding the rights to Crash Bandicoot , Spyro the Dragon , and Tony Hawk’s , but other omissions were considered odd and disappointing.

Sony’s second major handheld game console , the PlayStation Vita, was released in Japan in and in the West the following year. Built upon the PlayStation 2 , the PSX enhanced multimedia derivative was touted to bring convergence to the living room in by including non-gaming features such as a DVD recorder, TV tuner, and multi-use hard drive. Not only was it an unsuccessful attempt by Sony Computer Entertainment head Ken Kutaragi to revive the ailing consumer electronics division, [87] it also hurt Sony’s media convergence plans.

The CD-ROM format sported a much larger storage capacity than traditional cartridges, allowing for a incorporation of full-motion video into games. By the time Sega discontinued the unit as part of the shift towards the Sega Saturn , the unit had sold only 2.

Unveiled by Sega at June ‘s Consumer Electronics Show , the 32X was later described as the “poor man’s entry into ‘next generation’ games. Designed from the Mega Jet , a portable version of the home console designed for use on airline flights in Japan, Nomad served to succeed the Game Gear and was the last handheld console released by Sega. Released late in the Genesis era, the Nomad had a short lifespan. Sold exclusively in North America , the Nomad was never officially released worldwide, and employs regional lockout.

The release was five years into the market span of the Genesis, with an existing library of more than Genesis games. Sega decided to stop focusing on the Genesis in , several months before the release of the Dreamcast, by which time the Nomad was being sold at less than a third of its original price. Blake Snow of GamePro listed the Nomad as fifth on his list of the “10 Worst-Selling Handhelds of All Time,” criticizing its poor timing into the market, inadequate advertising, and poor battery life.

Microsoft Home Use Program. Archived from the original on February 22, Publishing became possible with the invention of writing , and became more practical upon the introduction of printing. Prior to printing, distributed works were copied manually, by scribes. Due to printing, publishing progressed hand-in-hand with the development of books.

The Chinese inventor Bi Sheng made movable type of earthenware circa , but there are no known surviving examples of his work. The Korean civil servant Choe Yun-ui , who lived during the Goryeo Dynasty, invented the first metal moveable type in AD [6].

Around , in what is commonly regarded as an independent invention, Johannes Gutenberg invented movable type in Europe, along with innovations in casting the type based on a matrix and hand mould.

This invention gradually made books less expensive to produce and more widely available. Early printed books, single sheets and images which were created before in Europe are known as incunables or incunabula. Eventually, printing enabled other forms of publishing besides books. The history of modern newspaper publishing started in Germany in , with publishing of magazines following in Missionaries brought printing presses to sub-Saharan Africa in the midth century.

Historically, publishing has been handled by publishers , although some authors self-published. Wikis and Blogs soon developed, followed by online books , online newspapers , and online magazines. Since its start, the World Wide Web has been facilitating the technological convergence of commercial and self-published content, as well as the convergence of publishing and producing into online production through the development of multimedia content.

Within the industry, there was the least amount of diversity in higher level editorial positions. Book publishers buy or commission copy from independent authors; newspaper publishers, by contrast, usually hire staff to produce copy, although they may also employ freelance journalists, called stringers. Magazines may employ either strategy or a mixture. Traditional book publishers are selective about what they publish.

They do not accept manuscripts direct from authors. Authors must first submit a query letter or proposal, either to a literary agent or direct to the publisher, depending on the publisher’s submission guidelines. The acquisitions editors review these and if they agree, send them to the editorial staff. Larger companies have more levels of assessment between submission and publication than smaller companies.

Unsolicited submissions have a very low rate of acceptance, with some estimates as low as 3 out of every 10, being accepted. The publishing process includes creation, acquisition, copy editing , production, printing and its electronic equivalents , marketing , and distribution. Although listed as distinct stages, parts of these occur concurrently. As editing of text progresses, front cover design and initial layout takes place, and sales and marketing of the book begins.

In the case of books, binding follows upon the printing process. It involves folding the printed sheets, “securing them together, affixing boards or sides to it, and covering the whole with leather or other materials”. Publishing is now a major industry with the largest companies Reed Elsevier and Pearson PLC having global publishing operations.

Some businesses maximize their profit margins through vertical integration ; book publishing is not one of them. Although newspaper and magazine companies still often own printing presses and binderies, book publishers rarely do. Similarly, the trade usually sells the finished products through a distributor who stores and distributes the publisher’s wares for a percentage fee or sells on a sale or return basis.

Affiliate marketing currently lacks industry standards for training and certification. There are some training courses and seminars that result in certifications; however, the acceptance of such certifications is mostly due to the reputation of the individual or company issuing the certification.

Affiliate marketing is not commonly taught in universities, and only a few college instructors work with Internet marketers to introduce the subject to students majoring in marketing. Education occurs most often in “real life” by becoming involved and learning the details as time progresses. The question pertains to the role and importance the publishing houses have in the overall publishing process. One example rearranged of the distribution of proceeds from the sale of a book was given as follows: [25]. Within the electronic book path, the publishing house’s role remains almost identical. The process of preparing a book for e-book publication is exactly the same as print publication, with only minor variations in the process to account for the different mediums of publishing.

Print on demand is rapidly becoming an established alternative to traditional publishing. Book clubs are almost entirely direct-to-retail, and niche publishers pursue a mixed strategy to sell through all available outlets — their output is insignificant to the major booksellers, so lost revenue poses no threat to the traditional symbiotic relationships between the four activities of printing, publishing, distribution, and retail.

Self-publishing has become very common. Publication is important as a legal concept :. Publishing became possible with the invention of writingand became more practical upon the introduction of printing.

Prior to printing, distributed works were copied manually, by scribes. Due to printing, publishing progressed hand-in-hand with the development of books. The Chinese inventor Bi Sheng made movable type of earthenware circabut there are no known surviving examples of his work.

The Korean civil servant Choe Yun-uiwho lived during the Goryeo Dynasty, invented the first metal moveable type адрес AD [6]. Aroundin what is commonly regarded as an independent invention, Johannes Gutenberg invented movable type in Europe, along with innovations in casting the type based on a matrix and hand mould.

This invention gradually made books less expensive to produce and more widely available. Early printed books, single sheets and images which were created before in Europe are known as incunables or incunabula. Eventually, printing enabled other forms of publishing besides books. The history of modern newspaper publishing started in Germany inwith publishing of magazines following in Missionaries brought printing presses to sub-Saharan Africa in the midth century.

Office XP was released to manufacturing on March 5, , [8] and was later made available to retail on May 31, , less than five months prior to the release of Windows XP.

X was released on November 19, New features in Office XP include smart tags , a selection-based search feature that recognizes different types of text in a document so that users can perform additional actions; a task pane interface that consolidates popular menu bar commands on the right side of the screen to facilitate quick access to them; new document collaboration capabilities, support for MSN Groups and SharePoint ; and integrated handwriting recognition and speech recognition capabilities.

With Office XP, Microsoft incorporated several features to address reliability issues observed in previous versions of Office.

Office XP is incompatible with Windows 95 and earlier versions of Windows. Office XP received mostly positive reviews upon its release, with critics praising its collaboration features, document protection and recovery functionality, and smart tags; however, the suite’s handwriting recognition and speech recognition capabilities were criticized and were mostly viewed as inferior to similar offerings from competitors.

As of May , over 60 million Office XP licenses had been sold. Microsoft released three service packs for Office XP during its lifetime. At a meeting with financial analysts in July , Microsoft demonstrated Office XP, then known by its codename, Office 10, which included a subset of features Microsoft designed in accordance with what at the time was known as the. NET strategy , one by which it intended to provide extensive client access to various web services and features such as speech recognition.

Before the release of Office 10 Beta 2, there was speculation that Microsoft intended to rebrand the new product as “Office ,” [22] “Office ,” [22] “Office.

NET” but unnamed sources stated that the company did not desire to do the same with Office 10, as the product was only partially related to the company’s. NET strategy. Office XP Beta 2 was released to 10, technical testers in late The Custom Maintenance Wizard, for example, now allowed setup components to be modified after their installation, and the setup process of Office XP itself used a new version of Windows Installer.

Microsoft also terminated the product’s support for Windows 95 and Windows NT 4. Office XP was released to manufacturing on March 5, , [8] and was later made available to retail on May 31, Microsoft released three service packs for Office XP throughout the product’s lifecycle that introduced security enhancements, stability improvements, and software bug fixes; each service pack was made available as separate Client and Full File update versions.

Full File updates did not require access to installation media and were intended for network administrators to deploy updates to Office XP users who installed the product from a server location; [31] [32] [33] users could also manually install Full File updates. Service Pack 1 SP1 was released on December 11, , and included performance and security improvements, as well as stability improvements based on error reports from users. Service Pack 2 SP2 , released on August 21, included all previously available standalone updates; some of the those previously released included cumulative security patches for Excel and Word to address potentially malicious code embedded in document macros.

Earlier updates were designed to update only administrative images and fail when applied directly to clients. Service Pack 3 SP3 was released on March 30, , and included all previously released updates, as well as previously unreleased stability improvements based on feedback and error reports received from users. SP3 does not require any earlier service packs to be installed.

Office XP has a streamlined, flatter appearance compared to previous versions of Office. According to Microsoft, this change involved “removing visually competing elements, visually prioritizing items on a page, increasing letter spacing and word spacing for better readability, and defining foreground and background color to bring the most important elements to the front.

Excel and Word introduce smart tags , commands for specific types of text including addresses , calendar dates , personal names , telephone numbers , ticker symbols , or tracking numbers in documents. Excel and Word support extensible smart tags that allow developers and organizations to display custom commands related to specific information. The smart tags used by Word are also available in Outlook if the former is configured as the default e-mail editor. The AutoCorrect and Paste Options commands in previous versions of Office have been updated to include smart tags that are shared among all Office XP programs.

The AutoCorrect smart tag provides individual options to revert an automatic correction or to prohibit an automatic correction from occurring in the future, and also provides access to the AutoCorrect Options dialog box. After the release of Office XP, Microsoft provided a repository for downloadable smart tags on its website.

Office XP introduces a task pane interface that consolidates popular menu bar commands on the right side of the screen to facilitate quick access to them.

Word , for example, includes a task pane dedicated to style and formatting options. Users can switch between open task panes through the use of back and forward buttons; a drop-down list also presents specific task panes to which users can switch. The default Startup task pane is automatically available when users launch an Office XP program and presents individual commands to open an existing file, create a new blank file or one from a template , add a network location, or open Office Help.

The Search task pane includes individual Basic and Advanced modes and allows users to query local or remote locations for files. The Basic mode allows users to perform full-text searches , while the Advanced mode provides additional file property query options. The Office Clipboard has been redesigned as the Clipboard task pane across all Office XP programs and can accommodate up to 24 clipboard items compared to 12 in Office Clipboard items provide a visual representation to help users distinguish different types of content.

Access and Excel support exporting and importing XML. Users can also save Excel workbooks as XML spreadsheets. Office XP introduces handwriting recognition in all Office programs, allowing users to write with a mouse or stylus instead of entering text by typing on a keyboard. Once installed, handwriting functionality is also available in Internet Explorer 5 and Outlook Express 5 or later. The downloadable Tablet Pack for Office XP provided an extension for Windows Journal to reuse notes as Outlook items and to import meeting information from Outlook into notes.

Speech recognition based on Microsoft Research technology is available for all Office XP programs, allowing users to dictate text into active documents, to change document formatting, and to navigate the interface by voice. The speech recognition feature encompasses two different modes: Dictation, which transcribes spoken words into text; and Voice Command, which invokes interface features.

Speech recognition can be installed during Office XP setup or by clicking the Speech option in the Tools menu in Word When installed, it is available as a Microphone command on the Language toolbar that appears in the upper-right corner of the screen lower-right corner in East-Asian versions of Office XP. When launched for the first time, speech recognition offers a tutorial to improve recognition accuracy, which begins by providing instructions to adjust the microphone for optimal performance.

Users can configure speech recognition settings, including pronunciation sensitivity in voice command mode, accuracy and recognition response time in dictation mode, and microphone settings through the Speech control panel applet. The Regional and Language Options applet provides Language toolbar and additional settings. With Office XP, Microsoft incorporated several features to address reliability issues observed in previous versions of Office:. Additionally, all Office XP programs provide options for users to digitally sign documents.

When upgrading from a previous version of Office, Office XP retains the user’s previous configuration. The Custom Installation Wizard can prohibit the installation, use, or uninstallation of programs or features such as the Run from Network and Installed on First Use setup options.

Finally, the Custom Maintenance Wizard has been updated to provide customization options to configure Office XP including user preferences and security settings. In an effort to curtail software piracy , Microsoft incorporated product activation technology into all versions of Office XP to prohibit users from installing a single copy of the software in a manner that violates the end-user license agreement EULA.

The EULA allows a single user to install one copy each on a primary device and a portable device such as a laptop. Users who make substantial hardware changes to an Office XP device may need to reactivate the software through the Internet or by telephone.

Product activation does not require personally identifiable information. Office XP introduced an optional subscription-based activation model that allowed consumers to annually license the product and receive incremental updates at a reduced price when compared with the cost of a full retail version. Microsoft originally intended to deliver the activation model to United States customers after the retail availability of Office XP on May 31, , but later decided to make it available to consumers in “a few select locations” instead, citing a more cautious delivery approach.
