This time, I shut down my computer when I was leaving my house for the night and when I returned the next morning my computer was still on, apparently it had never shut down. The lights on the keyboard and mouse were still on and everything. This has happened before, but upon restarting it boots up to a command prompt that says “Press Ctrl-Alt-Del to unlock”.

I press Crtl-Alt-Del and it changes to “Select a user” but no users are listed nor can I type anything into the command prompt.

After further investigating I discovered that it doesn’t matter what I type in at the “Press Crtl-Alt-Del to unlock” screen because any key I hit takes me to the “Select a user” screen and as I hit other keys it just cycles back and forth between these to prompts. I have not changed anything hardware wise since the upgrade and I’m pretty sure I haven’t installed any new software aside from some new games.

I’ve tried starting in safe mode and it takes me to that prompt. I checked the Boot Priority in the Bios, nothing was changed.

I tried optimizing Bios settings and that didn’t work. I also tried resetting the CMOS to see if that might help and nothing. I use this computer for work, it’s how I make a living. If I had known that upgrading was going to cause such problems I would have never done it. I have to say that I am very unimpressed by Windows 10 and wish I had never upgraded at all, though it looks like Microsoft is going to be forcing everyone to upgrade soon enough so I won’t be the only one experiencing these nightmarish issues.

I loaded up the Windows 7 disk I have and it shows that the drive Windows 10 is installed on is Drive E:. How would this have happened and how do I change it back?

Just to post an update, I’ve been digging into this issue for quite some time now and I think I was able to fix it. I will post it here in case anyone is able to use this information. After rebooting and relaunching explorer.

The main takeaway is that something changed my registry so that explorer. After backing up my registry through regedit, I started poking around and comparing my registry to my friends’. There were two main registries I focused on, due to being mentioned in other people’s issues. After locating these folders, I first changed the value of the “Shell” keys to ” explorer.

I’ve checked my PC several times with different scanning stuff and nothing seems to be out of the ordinary.

I might one day do a fresh install of Windows 10, but for now I’ll leave things as-is and keep my stuff backed up. It may take repeated tries with Windows Update till your pc is able to see that Update. You should make a try each day, from here on out, till you see it offered.

The suggestion I have is to go to the Start menu, click the Windows Settings icon. Click on Windows Update. Note that the display will show the new build in a new way, in the middle of the display. You will need to click on the blue line marked “Download and install now” when ready. Getting that Windows build update will put this pc in a better position for a more secure operating system.
